partial eclipse & native son

isunshowerso like everyone else in the US today i tried to get some eclipse view (safely! with glasses lovingly provided by my employer!) and was largely stymied by SOME FUCKING CLOUDS. funny story: there's a street photographer who frequents where i work and he came by and was like "i wanted to get some pictures of people viewing the eclipse" and i was like "well there's nobody here and also too much clouds" so he just took a picture of me pretending to watch it.
other thing i did today was finally finished richard wright's native son. sat outside with my book (too bright for phone browsing and work was dead so nobody disturbed me - i work outside so we routinely do read/draw/commit other hobby crimes) and turns out the third part of it, despite largely being two very long speeches, does actually go pretty quickly! i don't have much to say about this book other than that it really made me think. growing up where and when i did, going to high school and college where i did, you know, as a generally liberal-to-left white person, a lot of this mostly had me nodding and going "oh yeah, that makes sense". but it was a good plunge back into those sorts of politics because -- and this is a weird thing for me to say -- lately i've noticed my internal/automatic/whatever politics slowly slipping further center and i think i needed this read, as weird as it sounds. like i needed to be cold water doused with oh right, this is the way the world works and this is the way i understand it and other people understand it differently and shit sucks but it's not really my fault but also is my fault a little bit. you know?
