coming to you live from hell week: i read james baldwin and it was pretty good
this book took me a while to really settle into, but once i got into the back half i became really invested. in some ways, i relate a lot to david--trying to balance what i want with other things i want, and what i want to hide, and finding where i belong, and such. albeit on a much smaller scale. it would be easy to cast anyone in the story--david, hella, giovanni, hell, even jacques in some ways--as villains, but baldwin makes it quite clear how fear-driven everyone is. and of course, giovanni's room as a symbol for their relationship: care being put into it, but it's clumsy, and it's small and stifling and doesn't really belong to either of them.
in other news, this week i broke a tupperware, i've been continuously late to work because of subway troubles, was in a nasty mood last tuesday and then overslept the day after that. but ive got girl scout cookies and cheez-its and i am on god reward systeming my way through this. contest is on friday. we continue to survive.
