It's February, and I'm just now starting to read the books gifted to me over Christmas, starting with Ngozi Ukazu's Flip. I liked several things here -- that this was a self-love narrative that didn't actually end with Chi-Chi getting with her popular boy crush, the eventual understanding that there ARE pros to the low-income first-gen life that rich white dudes are actually missing out on, the description of depression as "dude your body literally feels heavy how the fuck do you get anything done", and my GOD the KPOP FANDOM in this was delightful. As a mostly-ex-kpop fan the way Chi-Chi and her friends (also I looooove Esther and Yesenia they're so much fun) talked about BGBB made me feel so happy and nostalgic for my own senior year of high school when I was losing my mind over Pristin and Nu'est. (RIP to them both. Pledis Entertainment go fuck yourself.)

The book, obviously, centers Chi-Chi and leaves Flip's story on the sidelines on purpose. I wish that some of Chi-Chi's self-love that triggered the switch back got reflected in Flip, though, or that Chi-Chi gave us a little more of a picture of what he did after graduation. I also feel like Chi-Chi could have gotten a more thorough self-love monologue/moment, it was mostly illustrated and obvi Ngozi is a comic artist, that's her medium, but it felt a little incomplete!

I really enjoyed it, though, and it's got me excited not only for continued updates to John Rich and Check Please Year 5 but for everything else Ngozi will put out in the future!!
