recent book: speech team by tim murphy. this book advertises itself as being about four former high school speech and debate kids in their forties coming to terms with an abusive teacher. actually this book is about the main character's struggle with alcoholism and internalized homophobia. this is fine. i read the entire thing in approx 5 hours while at work. wasn't really a book i had strong feelings about.
if you care for the details about my singing contest last weekend: one of my choruses qualified for the international contest next summer!!!!! (i'm really really excited but it's going to be soooooooooo expensive oh my GOD.) my quartet did bad and i am feeling rather frustrated about the whole endeavor. like, listen--so we get scored at these things, right? we got a slightly lower score than in march and the same feedback from the judges. so we thought we had spent the past six months fixing things but as it turns out, we didn't. and the other thing is that all our friends at these things sing in groups that score in the mid-high 70s, they're all in their 30s and have been doing barbershop for years and years. my guys and i are in our mid-20s (i turn 24 this week and can no longer say i'm in my early 20s anymore, sigh) and 3/4 of us have been doing this for a year and a half and this is all of our first quartet. and we scored a 67, which makes sense, contextually, but i want to be able to keep up with the "big kids", you know? our cool older sibling groups who very politely tell us we did a good job all the time and who i love love love to cheerlead for because they're so flipping talented. one of these groups did wake me up before you go-go this weekend and it was so fun and made me happy. another group did welcome to the black parade. this makes for a better barbershop song than you might think. if they post the video you best believe i will be sharing it.
anyways per the title i did get super drunk off of one shot and less than half of a very blue cocktail at the afterparty and got to sing a bit (altho not as much as i wanted) with some very cool and talented people and had a nice chat with one of the guys in the wake me up before you go-go group. the afterparty is my favorite part. and this time i didn't even crash in the middle from lack of sleep/anxiety like i usually do! so that's neat.
